On the 23rd of July, Ballad Films will present the completed short film The Ballad of Betty and Joe to cast, crew and the wider community in the historic hall of the Newtown Mission opposite the Dendy.
The Ballad of Betty and Joe should tantalize the taste buds of silent film fans. Beautifully shot in and around the Devonshire Street Tunnel, under Central Railway, and in the City of Sydney, it was made with the help of many hands. Accompanied by a superb score, it is a triumph in story telling. Two additional award-winning shorts will also be shown: Meditations on a Name (Dir: Bonnie Elliot) and the animation, Pianoforte (Dir. Antoinette Starkiewicz.
Around 200 people are expected to show for the party with door prizes, raffles and music to keep everyone entertained after the screening. Kids are welcome. Non-alcoholic refreshments will be available.

SOME OF THE FILM MAKERS
The Ballad of Betty & Joe has been made by some of
Director MARTHA ANSARA is well-known for her social documentaries, and is a recipient of the Australian Film Institute’s prestigious Byron Kennedy Award. Martha co-wrote the film with AWGIE Award winner, RIVKA HARTMAN, a playwright and film director. Rivka also co-produced with Adam Rigby and Charlie Carman (now with Film
Veteran cinematographer TOM COWAN worked with HUGH MILLER (recent features Three Blind Mice, Solo and The Bet). The film’s editor was NICK MEYERS, best known for his work on feature films, including The Boys, The Bank and Three Dollars, and a close collaborator with painter George Gittoes on his documentaries.

SYNOPSIS
Every morning Betty tramps alone through the city to join her fellow buskers in the pedestrian tunnel below, trying to earn a living. But her earnings are meagre and to make things worse, the new security guard, Joe, is trying to confiscate her fiddle. While Betty dreams of fame and fortune, Joe dreams of earplugs – something’s got to give.
